Twitching motility

Jeff Skerker was able to visualize the extension and retraction of type IV pili, using evanescent-wave fluorescence microscopy. These 6 nm dia. organelles are responsible for twitching motility in some species of bacteria and for social gliding motility in others. See Movies, Twitching Pseudomonas.
