The following Institute support resources are central to Rowland's ability to maintain an active and dynamic research
environment.
One full-time librarian manages over 20,000 volumes comprised of 12,000 serial titles and
7,000 books. The library catalog is on-line and heavy use is made of Internet-based searching.
Arrangements with local university and public libraries extend our access to necessary journals,
references and books.
Winfield Hill directs the Electronics Engineering Lab, which has two full-time people and
designs and fabricates custom instruments to advance mankind's progress in science. Over 400
separate designs have been produced in the past 12 years.
Shop staff includes three full-time machinists and sometimes students. The shop has a two
numerically-controlled milling machines, two lathes and various brakes, grinding machines, etc.
necessary to fulfill the most complex research requirements. A welding facility provides the
capability to rapidly fabricate ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) components.
