A recent paper from the Owens lab has been featured in the regular “Trilobites” column in the New York Times. Avalon Owens, Ian Battles and their collaborators from other US institutions published a study in the Journal of Insect Conservation showing that while light traps capture fewer corn earworm moths over time, pheremone traps indicate that this corn pest is as prevalent as ever. It appears that something has evolved in the moths’ attraction to light, potentially leading pest-monitoring sites astray in their evaluation of moth populations.
